Straight Talk for Veterans: An outstanding resource for Veteran Students and those who serve them

Fortify Associate, Dr. David Vacchi is a US Army veteran of 20 years with deployments for Operations Enduring and Iraqi Freedom in the early 2000s. When he retired from the Army, he used his Post 9/11 GI Bill and enrolled at UMass Amherst where he earned his PhD in Higher Education Administration with his research focusing on explaining student veteran success. David’s unapologetic advocacy for student veterans has made him a sought-after expert in the field.

His latest book, Straight Talk for Veterans: A Guide to Success in College is written from the perspective of a veteran, an advocate, and a higher education administrator. He draws on his own expertise and the voices of others who have successfully served veterans to create a volume that is an ideal guide for Veteran Transition Courses and Programs. The book is digestible by the veteran student and by those who are charged with serving them on campus.

The book is intended primarily for veteran students who are transitioning from the military to college, where they may feel like they are part of an underserved population on campus with no direct access to services. Knowing that this population has, in fact, the highest propensity for success on campus, the tone of the book is aspirational and energetic, while harnessing the tendencies of veteran students overcome obstacles and complete the mission at hand.

The book touches on themes including - foundations of student veteran success, transition concepts, and academic success that leads to employment success. All relevant to the veteran student and their needs.

David joined Laura De Veau, Principal of Fortify Associates for live chat on Thursday, November 7 via the Fortify Associates Facebook Page, where they discussed the book, and how Fortify Associates can provide fractional services for colleges and universities seeking to build their veteran cultural competence and services. You can watch the video of the chat here. And, be sure to follow Fortify Associates on Facebook!
